HOLY GRAIL: Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder

When I hear the word Holy Grail beauty product, I think of Hourglass Ambient Lighting powders. No product has been more of a mainstay in my beauty routine.
I have been using the Hourglass Ambient Lighting powder for years now - since around 2013 or 2014 and it has been a favorite of mine ever since. I first tried the three powder palette one and LOVED it, and as I loved the color Dim Light so much I purchased a full sized one. I have since given the palette to my mom as I thought she'd enjoy it more.

First of all, I'm sure you are all aware of what these are. After all they have been so hyped up a few years ago in the online community. But in case you are unfamiliar, they are Finishing Powders (not setting powders, I'll get into that) that use photoluminescent technology to filter out harsh light. The various shades correspond to different lighting effects on the skin and each shade is supposed to mimic that effect. For example Dim Light is great at blurring imperfections. Hourglass has since launched some other products in the ambient range, such as blushes, bronzers and strobe powders.

I love these a lot as a final step in my makeup routine either when I'm wearing minimal makeup (just some light foundation and mascara) or when I have a full face on. When I'm wearing minimal makeup it just makes my complexion healthier and makes my skin glow. When I have more on, it also makes my skin look more radiant. And the best part is that it doesn't accentuate my dry patches whatsoever. It also never looks powdery, even if I've accidentally put way too much on.

All the colors I have tried are great and I use them for different purposes kind of:
  • Dim Light: probably the best one - I use this as a last step to really blur out imperfections and makes my skin glow, but in the most subtle way. I use this all over the face with a Hakuhodo J104 powder brush (as pictured) by recommendation of the sweetest beauty counter SA ever from Hakuhodo. Because this color is closest to my skin tone, I do think it's best used with a large, medium to dense brush like this because it will pick up and deposit a good amount of the product (at least for me). You could just use the brush they sell from Hourglass or any large, fluffy powder brush.
  • Radiant Light: it's a bit dark compared to my skin tone so I'd personally use this as a topper for bronzer or when I feel like my foundation is too pale I'll use this all over because it gives minimal color but the difference is there.
  • Incandescent Light: amazing as a highlighter. They've recently released this color as an individual strobe powder. $38 for 0.16 oz. Honestly probably the best highlighter I've ever had. It's subtle without a lot of shimmer like most highlighters have and the effect is an amped-up version of the original powders. Highly recommend the palette for this color alone.
For makeup beginners, this is such a great one to get because it's hard to mess up. I'd suggest getting the palette which contains radiant light (a darker bronze-y shade), incandescent light (I'd call this a highlighter) and dim light (neutral beige-y skintone color). Comparing the palette vs individual powders the individual powders are actually cheaper per oz.
I took these prices from sephora.com:
  • powders: $46 for 0.35 oz works out to $131 per oz
  • strobe: $38 for 0.16 oz or $238 per oz
  • palette: $62 for 0.33 oz (0.11x3) or $187 per oz
so for two powders and one strobe powder: (0.11*2*$131)+(0.11*$238) this works out to $55. Not much of a difference compared to $62, but if you're nitpicky like me and don't see yourself using more than one or two colors it might be something to consider, especially since all the colors are now available individually.

I also went to the hourglass website and saw that there is now an option to customize the three pan palettes for $70 with three Ambient powders of your choice. Obviously, value wise it's worse than getting three of the individual powders, but again it presents a less capital intensive choice to satisfy your addiction or if you truly want more than one shade.

However I don't really reasonably see anyone hitting pan on even the smaller palette's pans within 1-2 years so I say the palette is still worth it IF you are a beginner and do not know what you want. Or, maybe you are an addict and want more than one powder then go ahead as it is less total cost.

There have been a couple of new alternatives to these in the past couple of years - and one that really caught my eye is the Laura Mercier Candleglow (I think I'll be purchasing this in the next couple of months or so and will try to do a comparison). Alternatively, Burberry Nude Powder and Chanel Les Beiges might be interesting to look at too.

Overall, a holy grail item for me and I definitely want to get more shades in the future - I'm eyeing mood and diffused light!

Giorgio Armani Beauty Sale

So I recently received an email from Giorgio Armani Beauty - they are currently having a sale of 20% off your purchase of $75+. This is a great deal so I would go and grab some stuff I was thinking of getting while it's 20% off (this ends June 28, 2016).

Some recommendations:

  • Rouge Ecstasy CC lipstick
  • Black Ecstasy Mascara
  • their foundations
  • Lip Maestro

Glossy Stains: YSL Glossy Stain vs Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain

As promised on instagram (and requested by some) I am reviewing a couple of lip stains -
ROUGE PUR COUTURE Vernis À Lèvres Glossy Stain and the Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain.
First off, the YSL glossy stain that I have is in #7 Corail Aquatique and the Revlon that I have is in the color LA Exclusive.

I have fallen in love with the YSL glossy stain because I find that it is the only thing that lasts on my lips and the colors are just so gorgeous. The color I have - #7 Corail Aquatique is a gorgeous coral and is so versatile. When I first put it on it looks orange but after some time it looks pink - strange, but I really really love the color. If I do get another glossy stain I would probably want a fuchsia one.

Recently I was browsing online and came across the Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain which many say are dupes for the YSL glossy stain. Given how much I love glossy stains I decided to go to a CVS and buy one. However when I got there I was quite disappointed at how the colors looked in real life. At first I really wanted the color London Posh but it didn't look that special in real life. Also, I couldn't swatch the colors so I could only rely on pictures online and how they looked in the bottle. I also considered Stockholm Chic but that too was an average color - I guess you can tell I love "non-average colors" it's because I try my best to buy colors that aren't very "dupe-able". I decided then to get the bright pink LA Exclusive, and I'm so glad I did because even though I don't find the color to be particularly unique I love how it looks on me.

YSL
Check out the color range and how they look on different models!
Pros:
  • better packaging (LOL) but also the applicator is a bit easier for me to use
  • much wider variety of colors - and nicer ones at that!
  • very opaque and longlasting
  • fades nicer
Cons:
  • expensive
  • smells strange

Revlon
Check out the color range including how the colors look on different models!
Pros:
  • nice texture from beginning to end
  • moisturizing
  • very long lasting
Cons:
  • not as pigmented (you have to layer it more)
  • can get patchy
  • doesn't fade as nicely as the YSL one
One thing about the YSL glossy stain that can be a little strange is the texture. When you're first applying it the consistency is very watery so it's quite easy to apply. However after it has set into the lips it thickens/sort of expands and becomes very comfortable and glossy. It does leave a nice stain afterwards. The Revlon on the other hand doesn't change textures like the YSL does. It's glossy from the beginning and turns into a stain after a while. In some ways the Revlon's texture is better (but this probably depends on personal preference).
These both stay for approximately the same amount of time (tested both out and they last nicely even after eating and drinking) and both are moisturizing/don't dry my lips which is awesome.

You can find them at all YSL and Revlon counters. I bought my YSL glossy stain as a special limited edition with the red one (pictured above) but I'm not such a huge fan of red - or rather I have too many reds that I don't use so I actually bough the set to give the red to my mom because I know she loves the rouge pur couture lipsticks so I thought she should try this. I bought the Revlon one at CVS.

Bottom line: YSL wins but only by a slight margin, though only if you're willing to spend the extra $25+

Urban Decay Ultimate Ozone Multipurpose Primer Pencil

So I ordered a few things from Sephora recently and one of them was the Urban Decay Ultimate Ozone Multipurpose Primer Pencil! I'm excited to try it because I've never really used a lip primer before.

I have tried this product a few times now and I can say that it really does make my lip color stay longer! it also doesn't change the original lip color which is great as it is  invisible! However I don't think it's amazing or life-changing, though I do think it's a great product.

Review: Urban Decay Good Karma Optical Blurring Brush

I first tried this brush last year because I decided I wanted to try out an actual foundation brush. Before I tried this I had used my hands or a sponge for foundation. My friend recommended this brush to me and when I tried  it I instantly fell in love.
This brush really makes my foundation look so much more natural and flawless - it really "blurs" your foundation. The bristles are really soft and it's so easy to wash and clean this brush!

Review Bioderma Sensibio H20

I've heard many great things about the bioderma sensibio H20 and I decided to try it starting exactly last year and I can say that I love it and it is worth the hype. It's decently priced and it's great for cleaning your makeup on lazy days or when you're only wearing very little makeup. It works great and is good for sensitive skin (this pink version is for sensitive skin - those with oily skin can check out the green one if I'm not mistaken).

How I apply:
I use a cotton pad and soak it with this. Then I apply it to my face and my makeup is dissolved! You can see the residue and dirt in the cotton pad.
This method is great for me because I tend to be very fussy about my hands when applying skin care products and seeing as this doesn't require my bare fingers it's extra points in my eyes!

The only thing is since the winter I've been preferring the Shu Uemura cleansing oils but now that it's summer I feel that the shu uemura can feel a bit oily so I am reverting back to this!

Definitely worth the hype! update: I didn't know you could buy this in the US (I bought mine back home in Asia) but I found a link where you can purchase this.
